Pin Prick Portrait Development 14: Embroidery Thread

Pin pricks into cartridge paper, A6; image taken from photograph Embroidery thread stitched into eye line, hanging loose front and back; before trimming Complete from front; laid flat on table Front; stuck to window (overcast day) I decided to experiment with a mixed media element added to the pin prick portrait. I thought that the addition of embroidery thread fitted with the needlework element of the pieces I have been working on and I wanted to reflect my feelings about the current situation. I decided to create a simplified portrait, using the dark blue thread to give the impression of tears running down the face by leaving the threads long and loose. In this piece I drew each thread from back to front, leaving equal lengths at both back and front with only the weight of the thread keeping it in place. When hung in the window the threads on the reverse were visible.

I had already done some experiments with adding texture through frottage in my drawings and monoprints, so I decided to try this technique by pin pricking the pattern into the paper. I had a selection of textured wallpaper samples at home, so I created a rubbing of it onto tracing paper using a soft pencil and then made a further tracing of one of my monoprint compositions. Pin pricks in cartridge paper; tonal values only Photograph worked from showing pin pricked areas Using sunlight to project image to highlight pin prick detail Rather than creating an outline portrait using pin pricks I decided to experiment with picking out only the tonal values of the face. I used a black and white copy of a photograph, using it as a guide to make dense patterns of pin pricks where tonal values were darkest and more thinly spread or left untouched where lighter areas and highlights were present. I think the result was fairly successful in that it is recognisably a portrait, but I think the detail and definition have been lost. It has a subtlety and softness which I think could be improved on by making different decisions about the areas of detail to be included and excluded.
