Acetates and Overhead Projector

Following my research into Kara Walker's work involving projection techniques I decided to experiment with acetates I had created from my monoprints - I made positive and negative black and white copies of the original prints using Photoshop which I then transferred onto acetate.  I then placed the acetates onto the overhead projector, altering their relative positions to combine, layer and superimpose the images.  The results were very interesting both in their own right and for development into other mediums, such as painting.  I would also like to experiment with incorporating projection together with large scale paintings or collages inspired by Kara Walker's silhouette cut outs and projections.

I think asymmetrical composition of the individual images becomes more balance when combined, creating symmetry between the positive and negative images.  There is also visual interest provided by the symmetry of the tonal values created by using positive and negative imagery together.  The original mark making has also left a textural impression in the lower figures as well as ghost images which are present yet barely visible.

Merging the acetates more closely produced a deepening of the tonal values and again introduced a symmetrical element to the composition.  I think these ideas can be further developed in paintings and collage.
