Light Box Experiment

I wanted to continue working with some of the compositions I had already created as monoprints and transferred to acetate - I would normally use the OHP to project the image to use as the basis for a painting or drawing.  I wanted to find a way to recreate this effect so, as it was a sunny day I decided to experiment with using bright light to purposefully cast shadows which I could then use as guides for drawing and painting - effectively a kind of light box.

I had a large empty picture frame, so I removed the backing but left the glass in place before fixing one of my prepared acetates into it.  I then stood the frame in direct sunlight, creating a similar effect to the OHP - the darker areas on the acetate stop the light passing through, creating shadows on the surface.  Of course with no lense to magnify the image it remains roughly the same size, however I did find that as the afternoon - and the sun's relative position - moved on the shadows changed, lengthened and distorted.  I think this is an interesting avenue to explore; I will also investigate the effect created by shining a directional light (eg a reading lamp) through the frame.
