I think this was an extremely brave piece of art! It must take real courage to destroy a piece of your own artwork, but to do so to the work of such a successful and respected artist takes another level of courage!  However, the result is an extremely interesting concept.  There is very little visible mark making remaining, and this piques the viewer's interest as they consider the absence of image, what might have been there originally and is now unseen, and Rauschenberg's thinking behind the concept.  It also makes us question the presence of the artist, or both artists in this case, in the creation of mark making and their destruction.
