Pin Prick Portrait Development 14: Embroidery Thread

Pin pricks into cartridge paper, A6; image taken from photograph Embroidery thread stitched into eye line, hanging loose front and back; before trimming Complete from front; laid flat on table Front; stuck to window (overcast day) I decided to experiment with a mixed media element added to the pin prick portrait. I thought that the addition of embroidery thread fitted with the needlework element of the pieces I have been working on and I wanted to reflect my feelings about the current situation. I decided to create a simplified portrait, using the dark blue thread to give the impression of tears running down the face by leaving the threads long and loose. In this piece I drew each thread from back to front, leaving equal lengths at both back and front with only the weight of the thread keeping it in place. When hung in the window the threads on the reverse were visible.

Realisation

These are the compositions which would have been entered into the university's physical exhibition had it taken place. The top image is the one to be submitted for the online exhibition. Presence and absence play a part in describing who we are, what we hold onto and what we have lost, what is seen and what is unseen, reminding us of the fragility of life and the human condition. My practice seeks to capture not only a moment in time, but also what is behind, around and ahead, connecting fragments of images to try to see beyond the immediately visible through the use of non-traditional mark making and materials. Pin Prick Portrait Development 11: Baking Parchment

Tracing paper taped to baking parchment - same image as previous photograph piece Completed image pinned to a sunny window Detail I really like this piece for the texture and colour of the baking parchment. Unfortunately light does not pass through the paper as well as other substrates so that the image is barely visible from a distance and can only be seen from an angle close up to the paper. I would like to experiment further with colour and texture, but using other substrates.
